notes mean nothing
to me is
a collection of short, quiet songs
about the vague, complicated relationships between people.
nothing is spelled out, little is clear; we have to guess at
what’s really going on, what’s driving the characters. but we
feel for them none the less. topics are taken en medias reas
and we are left to deduce the histories and futures, the
impetus and the outcomes, of the people involved. they are
vignettes, captured moments put to music. anguished wails
over wasted days. plaintive musings and fractured ramblings
intense emotions dealt with matter-of-factly, without
sentimentality. even the songs that come closest to love
songs are not love songs; love is a word not spoken, a
concept too literal, and at the same time too indistinct,
to bother mentioning.
musically, it is spare, without being too minimal. it is discordant
without being cacophanous. it is pleasant without being overly
pretty.
